 I am excited, I was just invited to speak at this event on April 30, 2011.  It is a free event and I encourage all who are in the Reston area to attend.
On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in this country every day.(Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, Intimate Partner Violence, 1993-2001, February 2003. Bureau of Justice Statistics, Intimate Partner Violence in the U.S. 1993-2004, 2006.)

One such woman was Forty-eight-year-old Alice Jenkins Everette who was sitting in her car in the drive-thru line shortly before 9 a.m. when her husband, Daniel Lunie Everette, 52, tracked her down, according to Prince William County police. Reports later showed that Alice had been going through years of abuse, documenting threats and violence. Alice, had even had a restraining order,  but on Thursday, February 17th, her life was cut short, leaving behind three beautiful children and a broken community.

Domestic Violence is a growing problem and a crime, and we want to show that we refuse to sit back and continue to allow such tragedies to take place!

We are calling for all those that want to see an end to the cycle of abuse join us for this event!

We will have a panel discussion with various speakers, and experts in the field of Domestic Violence.  We are inviting the family and friends of Alice as well as other victims to come and be a voice for those that can not speak.  We want you to share your voice and let the public know the struggle of one going through the pain of an abusive relationship. We will also have resource tables and booths for those that want to take information with them and spread the awareness about this issue.

We can NOT sit back and just allow this problem to continue without a fight.  We need more information put out there about domestic violence.  We need resources available for abusers so that they have a place to go if they are trying to get help.. We need police, courts, schools, and religous organizations to work together!

1 in 4 teens in a relationship say they have been called names, harassed or put down by their partner through cell phones and texting.

Digital communication is an integral part of teens lives and this fairly unchartered digital space has created new challenges for teens as they start to experience intimate relationships. Unfortunately, dating abuse in the digital world is increasingly becoming a serious problem unique to the millennial generation of teens.

Cellphones and the internet have become prime environment for controlling behavior, such as sending unwanted text messages or pressuring for nude pictures, that can be abusive or lead to relationship violence.
In an effort to prevent teen dating abuse and help teens build healthy relationships, the Ad Council has partnered with the Family Violence Prevention Fund and the Office on Violence Against Women on a national, multimedia PSA campaign.

The new PSAs are designed to help teens recognize digital dating abuse and provide them with the tools to initiate a conversation about this issue. The PSAs direct teens to visit www.ThatsNotCool.com were they are encouraged to draw their own lines around what is, or is not, acceptable relationship behavior and seek help from their peers.

]]><![CDATA[Teach your Teen that Love is a R.A.P! ]]>Fri, 16 Oct 2009 08:01:53 -0800http://lovedoesntleavebruises.weebly.com/1/post/2009/10/teach-your-teen-that-love-is-a-rap.html October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but any day is the PERFECT day to talk to your teen about dating violence.  Teens often times have difficulty understanding what love really is and many parents have trouble having the “Tough Talk” but it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable if you teach your teen that

Love is a RAP:

R-Love is Respect and is displayed when two people hold each other’s feelings and thoughts in high esteem.

A: Love is an Action.  It is easy to say the words, “I Love You” but love is more easily recognized by how a person is actually treated.  Teach teens that when some uses the word “love” it should be backed up by actions of respect and value. 
 
P: Love is a Partnership.  A real relationship is one where two people have equal input in the decisions that are made concerning the relationship.  This can be as small as deciding on the movie that will be seen on a date or whether or not the couple should have sex.
 
It may be hard to talk about relationships with your “baby,” but keep in mind that when you teach your son or daughter that Love is a RAP is like giving them a three-point test to measure their relationships.   It’s simple, if it doesn’t feel right or look right…it probably isn’t right and it is okay to end the relationship.  However, when we are respected, we feel it by the actions of another person, and then we are able to see that it is a true partnership.
